Faculty and trainees are recognized at annual graduation and awards celebration
The UT Southwestern Department of Radiology recognized several individuals at its annual Graduation and Awards Celebration on June 9, 2018. The event was held at the Dallas Arboretum, with more than 200 guests in attendance.
Golden Apple Award
The Golden Apple Award is presented for teaching excellence and dedication to instructing trainees in the Radiology Residency program. This year’s recipients were Dr. Kristen Bishop, who teaches trainees at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dr. Asha Kandathil, who teaches residents at Clements University Hospital, and Dr. Kevin Cederberg, who teaches trainees at Children’s Medical Center Dallas.
Radiology Award for Outstanding Mentoring
Dr. Robert Lenkinski, Vice Chair of Radiology Research and Professor of Radiology and in the Advanced Imaging Research Center, received the Radiology Award for Outstanding Mentoring in recognition of his extraordinary service to the department’s trainees through mentorship. Dr. Lenkinski was recognized for his mentoring skills earlier in the academic year by the UT Southwestern Postdoctoral Association.
RSNA Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award
The Roentgen Research Award is presented annually to a trainee with the goal of recognizing a resident or fellow who has demonstrated excellence in research through the presentation of scientific papers at regional or national meetings, the publication of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, the receipt of research grants or contributions to the success of research within the department, as well as other research activities. This year’s recipient, Dr. Richard Ahn, will receive advanced training at UT Southwestern through its fellowship program in Vascular & Interventional Radiology.
Outstanding Senior Resident Award
The Outstanding Senior Resident Award is presented annually to an exceptional member of the graduating residency class who best exemplifies the qualities of those who founded the department, and who serve as a role model patient care, teaching and service. This year’s recipient, Dr. Julie Birch, served as Junior Chief Resident and then as Chief Resident during her training. She will receive advanced training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston through its fellowship program in Vascular & Interventional Radiology.
Dr. Lenkinski holds the Charles A. and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Chair in Translational Research; and the Jan and Bob Pickens Distinguished Professorship in Medical Science, in Memory of Jerry Knight Rymer and Annette Brannon Rymer and Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Pickens.
