Dermatopathology is a subspecialty within the fields of dermatology and pathology which is primarily focused on the diagnosis of skin diseases. Dermatopathologists are physicians with advanced training in dermatology or pathology, along with additional fellowship training in the specific field of dermatopathology.

A dermatopathologist diagnoses specific skin diseases by examining tissue samples under a microscope and correlating those features with clinical and laboratory findings. By establishing accurate and specific diagnoses, dermatopathologists play a key role in the treatment of skin diseases including skin cancer and inflammatory dermatoses such as psoriasis, lupus, eczema, and others. Dermatopathology research at UT Southwestern is concerned not only with common and rare skin cancers but also with inflammatory skin diseases including lupus, psoriasis, morphea, and others.
