Information for International Applicants
Recognizing that some of our most talented applicants are not permanent residents, we are committed to recruiting qualified international trainees. UT Southwestern accepts permanent residents or J-1 ECFMG sponsored visas. Unfortunately, the medical school does not sponsor H-1B visas. Completion of an ACGME-approved Internal Medicine Residency is a prerequisite except in highly exceptional cases. ACGME-International residency approval does not fulfill the requirement for ABIM eligibility.
We are committed to ensuring that all of the strengths of our program are accessible to our international fellows. In this vein, international candidates who have demonstrated a clear commitment to research but are not eligible for NIH support from our T32 training grant are still encouraged to apply for the Research Track. Additional mechanisms of support are available. J-1 visa holders who have graduated from our training program have been quite successful in securing nephrology positions that satisfy the UCIS waiver requirement. Further, our recent international fellows have also been able to secure academic positions in nephrology divisions with H-1B and O-1 sponsorship.
