ASP/IP/Epi Clinical Track
This track is designed to provide focused experiences in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and hospital epidemiology. Fellows have the opportunity to expand their experiences at both Parkland Hospital, our county safety-net hospital, and at Clements University Hospital. In addition, fellows are provided mentors in the field of ASP/IP/Hospital Epi to help develop and complete a project in an area of interest. Specific components of the track can be modified to fit each fellow’s individual career aspirations and needs.
Objectives
The curriculum aims to promote excellence in the following areas:
- Identify targets for antimicrobial stewardship and measures their impact
- Recognize and interpret metrics to compare stewardship at different facilities
- Learn to design and implement clinical process improvement interventions
- Develop an understanding of outbreak investigations
- Develop an understanding of the regulatory environment surrounding hospital infection prevention and public reporting requirements for certain infections
Available Activities
- Elective time with Antimicrobial Stewardship at Parkland and Clements University Hospital
- Serve on Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee and/or Infection Control Committee
- Elective time with Hospital Epidemiologist at Parkland and/or UTSW
- Elective time with Infection Prevention at Parkland and/or UTSW
- Opportunities to participate in quality improvement activities
- Access to yearly Epidemiology for the Clinical Investigator Course
- Complete SHEA Course in Healthcare epidemiology and IDSA ASP basic and advanced courses
Resources
Fellows can take advantage of UTSW/Parkland’s extensive resources in Antimicrobial Stewardship, Hospital Epidemiology, and Infection Prevention. Weekly HIV and General ID didactic series given by faculty. A faculty research mentor will be identified, and fellows are strongly encouraged to conduct clinical or translational research and disseminate this work at regional or national meetings.
