Education in General Medicine

Educational Mission

To educate and inspire the next generation of (generalists and palliative care) physicians who will prevent disease when possible, manage chronic conditions when necessary, and support patients and families always wherever their journeys may lead by prioritizing a culture of collaborative, evidence-based practice and role modeling emotional well-being.

Education Goals

• Support faculty for leadership and scholarly development opportunities in undergraduate and graduate medical education
• Enhance teaching skills development resources of faculty, including learner evaluation systems and faculty development and mentoring programs specifically related to teaching skills
• Develop mentorship programs to increase student and resident interest in generalist and palliative care careers

The Division runs and participates in a broad array of educational programs for medical students, residents, and fellows at UT Southwestern, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and the Dallas VA.

Fellowship Training Programs

We run two fellowship programs designed to train future generations of academic physicians in:

• General Internal Medicine Fellowship
• Palliative Medicine Fellowship

Outcomes and Health Services Research Works-in-Progress Seminar

A campus-wide, twice-monthly meeting for faculty and trainees, the Works-in-Progress (WIP) seminar is an interactive, problem-solving lunch session where individuals present “works-that-need progress” such as getting feedback on: preliminary data, draft tables and figures, abstract submissions/presentations, proposed specific aims for grants, and challenging analytic issues.

Training, Degree, and Certificate Programs

We partner with the Center for Translational Medicine (CTM), which is part of the national consortium of NIH funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Institutions that share a common vision to improve human health by transforming the clinical and translational research and training environment. Its goals are to accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into treatments for patients, to engage communities in clinical research efforts, and to train a new generation of clinical and translational scientists.

The CTM offers training, degree, and certificate programs in clinical and translational science to provide rigorous training in the skills and competencies necessary to plan, conduct, and interpret superior clinical and translational research, particularly in the area of patient-centered outcomes research. Its programs provide comprehensive, individualized, team-science based education in the principles and methods of research and in the skills and strategies required for the development of successful academic careers through a didactic and Socratic curriculum.
