Services

UT Southwestern's commitment to producing exceptionally trained physicians and to ensuring the highest standards of safety and care has entered an exciting new phase with the Simulation Center.

Our team leads the way at creating innovation in simulation, research, and medical education. We aim to help our learners develop new knowledge, optimize patient safety, enhance preparedness, and create the next generation of leaders in patient care.

Building Competencies and Expanding Skills

UT Southwestern’s enhanced simulation program provides training in 13 competencies – or entrustable professional activities (EPA). The program includes valuable hands-on instruction in more than two dozen course areas, including:

  • Physical exam
  • IV placement
  • Intramuscular injections
  • Suturing and knot tying
  • Foley placement
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Sterile techniques and personal protective equipment
  • Pelvic and breast exams
  • Ultrasound

Tangible Certification

UT Southwestern’s simulation program offers tangible certification that students have trained in the 13 competencies considered essential by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

As students demonstrate their proficiency, that information is entered into a passport. An electronic version of the passport can be embedded with samples of the student’s work – for example, talking with patients or doing procedures – that can be shown to hiring physicians when it comes time for residency interviews.

Standardized Patient Program

Standardized patients are trained to portray the roles of patients and family members, which provides the learner an opportunity to practice and gain confidence in their history gathering and physical exam and communication skills.

Simulation 101 for Educators

Faculty and educators can learn about simulation education with Simulation 101: An Introduction to Simulation. In the training, learn to effectively create, implement, and facilitate simulation-based education.

Structured as blended theory, the course consists of an online Journal Club, two face-to-face meetings, six online modules (three to six hours to complete), and up to six hours of traditional classroom training.

If you are interested, please complete the Sim 101 application and return it by Jan. 31 of each year.

Sim 101 is hosted by two experienced educators, Jessica Henandez, M.D., and Aditee Ambardekar, M.D., M.S.Ed.
