Research Programs in Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery brings together clinicians and scientists from diverse disciplines to conduct biomedical research improving the health of our patients through advancing the understanding, detection, prevention, and treatment of conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat, brain, head, and neck in both adults and children.

Our research mission is to develop innovative diagnostic tools and therapies that enhance the health and well-being of our community. Our patients come first, which is why we bring research directly to the bedside. We are committed to uncovering the root causes of disease, exploring potential treatments and preventive options, and engaging patients in clinical research studies.

Faculty have always maintained a high level of research and scholarly activity in the field of otolaryngology and communication disorders. Faculty actively share their research through peer-reviewed publications and by presenting at regional and national scientific conferences. Faculty have attained national recognition as a result of an extensive research portfolio encompassing basic, clinical, and translational studies, as well as surgical simulation in education and investigations in population health and quality improvement. Our commitment to advancing knowledge fosters an environment that enhances patient care and supports the training of future physicians and clinician scientists.

Investigators also closely collaborate with other departments and institutions to bridge the gap between basic and clinical science and bring cutting-edge research to our patients. The strong culture of collaboration across the UTSW campus drives the expansion of our efforts in translational and clinical research.
