Tomorrow's Leaders in Vitreoretinal Surgery

The goal of the two-year Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship Program is to provide graduates the widest possible exposure to surgical and medical retina. The program is geared toward training well-rounded future thought leaders in the field. In addition to providing trainees with clinical experience, retina faculty strongly encourage and expect fellows to undertake scholarly activities, including submitting an abstract for presentation at at least one major national meeting.

An Expanding Fellowship

For 2025, we will match three fellows. Our retina faculty cover all retinal areas, including vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, uveitis and infectious diseases, ocular oncology, ROP and pediatric retina, secondary IOLs, inherited retinal degenerations, and clinical trials.

Hospitals and Clinics in Dallas and Tarrant Counties

As the only academic medical center in a 200-mile radius, UT Southwestern has a large and diverse patient population across five hospital settings, including Parkland, Clements University Hospital and Aston Ambulatory Care Center, Children's Health, Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

Surgery, Didactics, and Research

Fellows can expect to perform 300-400 surgeries per year as primary surgeon. Weekly retina fellows meetings are ideal for discussing cases and articles. Grand Rounds on Friday mornings feature residents' case presentations, and, on a monthly basis, are followed by a retinal imaging conference. Fellows will have 10% of their time protected for research.

Prerequisites

Candidates must have successfully completed ACGME (or Canadian equivalent) accredited ophthalmology residency training and be eligible to obtain a full Texas medical license. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required.

Leadership

Faculty members involved in the vitreoretinal program are outstanding clinicians and scholars who cover the whole breadth of vitreoretinal disease, including uveitis, macula, and ocular oncology, with additional opportunities to gain expertise in electrophysiology and ultrasonography.
