Carlos Girod and Samir Parikh Elected Members of ACCA
Dr. Carlos Girod, a Professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Dr. Samir M. Parikh, a Professor and Division Chief of Nephrology, have been elected members of the American Clinical and Climatological Association (ACCA).
The honorary society was created in 1884 by physicians and scientists to improve medical education, research and practice. Its initial concern was with tuberculosis and its treatment in a suitable climate. Throughout its history, the ACCA expanded its interests to all scientific and clinical aspects of medicine and its specialties as well as epidemiology, preventive and environmental medicine, while retaining a continuing interest in the influence of global climate changes on health and disease. Active membership is limited to 250 physicians in the U.S. and Canada.
Dr. Girod was named Associate Vice President for Parkland Health Affairs in March 2016. He serves as the primary liaison between Parkland and UT Southwestern.
Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Girod is a highly regarded pulmonologist and clinician. He holds a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan and completed internal medicine residency training at UT Southwestern. He then received advanced training with a research fellowship at the Denver Veterans Administration Medical Center and clinical fellowships in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Girod joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1997.
Dr. Parikh graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in chemistry. He earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt, where he received the Founder’s Medal as valedictorian of his graduating class. He completed residency and fellowship training in Nephrology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston. Prior to joining UT Southwestern in 2021, he served as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Associate Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine at BIDMC.
Dr. Parikh has received multiple honors for teaching and mentorship, having led programs funded by organizations including the Doris Duke Foundation and the National Institutes of Health to train undergraduates, post-baccalaureate students, medical students, residents, and fellows in research.
Drs. Girod and Parikh join Dr. David Karp, a Professor and Division Chief of Rheumatic Diseases, as the only active UT Southwestern faculty members in the ACCA.
