A deep commitment to care
UT Southwestern delivers on its mission to put patients first with compassion and innovation.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of UT Southwestern is its reputation for caring for patients who were told by others they could not be helped. At UTSW, complex is commonplace, and nothing is too rare. The Medical Center joined a consortium to fund gene therapy trials for rare children’s diseases in hopes of finding solutions to “incurable” diseases.
Throughout the year, excellence was honored. Among the achievements for outstanding patient care, two nursing leaders were inducted into the American Academy of Nursing’s 2023 Class of Fellows and UTSW received recognition in a specialized field as a global leader in robotic pancreas surgery. For the seventh year in a row, UT Southwestern was ranked the No. 1 hospital in DFW by U.S. News & World Report and – for the first time ever – made the magazine’s elite Honor Roll listing of hospitals and was ranked the No. 1 hospital (tied)* in Texas for the first time.
The year 2023 also brought continued strategic growth to expand access and care options across North Texas, as well as the launch of a renovation project to enhance services on the main campus.
Delivering excellence in patient care
UT Southwestern’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital is now ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Texas (tied)* and, for the seventh year in a row, the No. 1 hospital in DFW, according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals listing for 2023-24. UT Southwestern is also nationally ranked in 11 specialty care areas.
Growing to serve
Raising the bar in patient care
UT Southwestern has become a global leader in robotic pancreas surgery and one of the few international centers of excellence for this approach. The Whipple procedure, or pancreaticoduodenectomy, is one for which UTSW surgeons have specialized training in robotic-assisted surgery, benefiting patients with smaller incisions and faster recovery times. The gastrointestinal surgery program was initially led by robotic pancreas surgery pioneer Herbert Zeh III, M.D., Chair of Surgery.
Weekly insulin injections are inching closer to FDA approval, thanks to the efforts of UTSW researcher Ildiko Lingvay, M.D., Professor of Internal Medicine, who led phase three clinical trials on a new drug called icodec for Type 2 diabetes that helped patients maintain healthy blood sugar. The findings were published in JAMA.
A consortium of government, industry, and nonprofit partners will fund gene therapy clinical trials for rare diseases at UT Southwestern and Children’s Health, where scientists are working on therapies to treat children’s neurodevelopmental disorders. Elpida Therapeutics, a biotechnology company, is collaborating with the group to develop gene therapy trials for spastic paraplegia type 50 (SPG50) and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4J (CMT4J).
UTSW nurse leaders David Wyatt, Ph.D., RN, Associate Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer for University Hospital, and Bradley Goettl, D.N.P., APRN, Assistant Director of the Office of Advanced Practice Providers, were inducted into the American Academy of Nursing’s 2023 Class of Fellows. The Academy epitomizes nursing’s most accomplished leaders in policy, research, administration, practice, and academia.
Rupesh Kotiya was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2014. He and his wife, Siobhan, and their children made the difficult decision in 2023 to donate his organs as his body began to shut down. His selfless act and compassion for others saved four lives during a procedure that took place at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital.
With eyes that light up and turn into hearts, the Moxi robots are lending a hand at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital. The pilot project using robots for deliveries is freeing up more time for caregivers to assist patients.
