Opening Their Hearts to Advance Research and Care
Through the years, friends of UT Southwestern have been steadfast supporters contributing to the institution’s progress and growth. Outdoing themselves once again, our benefactors made significant gifts in 2022 – both large and small – to advance these efforts, including helping the Medical Center reach its $1 billion goal for brain research and care.
Historic campaign for the brain
A five-year UT Southwestern philanthropic campaign infuses $1 billion into the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute, one of the largest neuro-focused investments by a U.S. academic medical center to date. The campaign yielded more than $500 million in community philanthropic support, combined with $500 million in investments in facilities and programs from UTSW.
Investing in the future of medicine
A $100 million gift from the O’Donnell Foundation supports and endows UT Southwestern’s new Peter O’Donnell Jr. School of Public Health. The Foundation, established by the visionary late philanthropists Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr., made this gift for its unprecedented potential to accelerate the momentum of the new school, which will enroll its first students this fall.
The Perot family and their foundations have provided a $50 million endowment for UT Southwestern’s Medical Scientist Training Program, an elite program that provides graduates a dual M.D./Ph.D. degree to strengthen the advancement of discoveries from the lab to patient care.
Two gifts from generous benefactors last year established endowments for the new Peter O’Donnell Jr. School of Public Health. Dallas philanthropist Lyda Hill donated $5 million to establish a deanship at the new school while UT Southwestern Medical School alumnus Richard E. Hoffman, M.D., M.P.H., pledged $1.5 million to establish a scholarship fund.
Transformative Giving
Celebrating its ruby anniversary, The Sweetheart Ball builds on its decadeslong support of cardiology research. April marked the 40th anniversary of the event and its support for UT Southwestern’s Division of Cardiology.
School of Health Professions alumna Sneha Patel, M.P.A.S., is today a successful physician assistant who raises money and volunteers for mission trips in honor of her mother, who was injured in a car accident. Ms. Patel credits her education at UTSW for much of her current success and passion to help the underserved.
The work of three UTSW investigators received a jump-start with grants from The Cary Council. Seed funding through The Cary Council Early-Stage Research Grants often leads to new sources of funding for early-career faculty to pursue breakthrough discoveries. To date, these grants have attracted $9.4 million in additional funding.
