TN
UT Southwestern will sponsor a TN visa for certain positions if the employee is a Mexican or Canadian citizen.
TN Visa Eligibility
To be eligible for a TN visa:
- You must be a citizen of Canada or Mexico.
- You must possess the minimum qualifications of a member of one of the professions on the list of Professionals in USMCA Chapter 16, Appendix 2.
- Your entry must be “temporary.”
- Your job must constitute “pre-arranged” professional activity for a U.S. entity, within one of the professions on the list of Professionals in USMCA Chapter 16, Appendix 2.

Filing TN Change of Status or Extensions in the U.S.
UT Southwestern’s Office of Internatinoal Affairs (OIA) must file a TN change-of-status or extension petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The following documents are required:
- Job description form for TN application
- Export Controls Questionnaire
- TN support letter from supervisor (23 KB Word document):
Please use a Word document to complete a draft of the support letter. The draft can be included in the TN application submitted to OIA. A signed letter will be requested later, once a senior immigration specialist has reviewed the TN application. - TN filing fee of $780 or premium processing fee of $2,805 (optional if expedited service is desired)
Items Needed from Employee/Beneficiary (give to departmental contact)

- Copy of final degree, with English translation
- Degree equivalency evaluation, if foreign degree (see list of Credential Equivalency Evaluation entities)
- Copy of foreign passport biographic page
- Copies of all U.S. immigration status documents, if any (such as visa stamp, I-94, I-20, DS-2019, I-797)
- If currently in TN status, copies of paycheck summaries for previous three months
For Employee/Beneficiary with Dependents in the U.S.
Dependents have the option to file their change of status or extension with USCIS online. The online filing fee is $420.
If filing with paper, the following requirements apply:
- Copies of all U.S. immigration status documents, if any (such as I-94, I-20, DS-2019, I-797)
- Copy of marriage certificate and/or birth certificate with English translation
- Copy of dependent's foreign passport biographic page and visa pages (if any)
- I-539 Form from USCIS, completed and signed by the primary dependent (usually a spouse) with the supplement completed for all other dependents
- Filing fee of $470
TN Travel
Canadian Citizens
Required documents for entry into the U.S.:
- Valid passport
- Employment letter
- CGFNS certificate (RNs only)
Canadian employees will present documents to the immigration officer at the port of entry.
Mexican Citizens
Mexican employees will apply for their TN visa at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
