Date and Time: Ensuring It Is Consistent and Understandable

The primary goal is to ensure that the information is easily understood by everyone, including those using assistive technologies like screen readers.

Avoid Hyphens

  • Instead of '1-2 pm', use '1 to 2 pm'
  • Instead of 'Monday-Friday', use 'from Monday to Friday' or 'Monday through Friday'

Use Spoken Formats for Dates

  • Instead of '4-24-2026', use ' April 24, 2026'

Explicitly State Time Ranges

  • Instead of '9-5', use '9 a.m. to 5 p.m.'

Additional Considerations

  • When abbreviating days of the week, use the first three letters (e.g. 'Mon', 'Tue', 'Wed') to ensure they are pronounced correctly by screen readers.
  • If specifying a date range spanning multiple months, include the month with each date to avoid confusion (e.g. 'from April 24th, 2024 to April 24th, 2026').

It is important to always test your content with a screen reader to ensure it is being read as intended. Also, consider providing multiple formats for dates and times – both written and spoken formats – to accommodate different user preferences.

By following these guidelines, you can help create content that is more accessible and inclusive for everyone.
