About the Program

The Prosthetics-Orthotics Residency Program begins each year in January and lasts for 12 months.

As an employee of UT Southwestern, you’ll see patients under the supervision of your direct faculty supervisor and will meet regularly with professional staff. Your direct supervisor—as role model, teacher, and advisor—will guide your training and involvement in patient care. Your role will progress from observation, to assistance, and ultimately to primary patient care responsibility, based on your learning and performance.

At the end of 12 months, successful residents receive a certificate of completion from the UT Southwestern School of Health Professions.

Expectations

The Prosthetics-Orthotics Residency Program is an active learning process that will require you to participate in independent learning activities.

As a resident, we’ll expect you to:

• Complete a directed study project as outlined in current NCOPE standards
• Apply and pay for a student license with the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation.
• Become a resident member of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists before you arrive on campus to ensure timely delivery of the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics and access to AAOP’s Online Learning Center
• Attend the annual Texas Chapter of AAOP meeting with expenses paid by the Prosthetics-Orthotics Residency Program, in compliance with state guidelines

We maintain a strict attendance policy and may end your residency if you fail to attend required patient care activities or courses. The Residency Director may provide make-up activities and opportunities, when unavoidable circumstances warrant it.

Objectives

The Prosthetics-Orthotics Residency Program provides residents with the technical, clinical, and research experiences needed to become competent clinicians. Successful completion of the residency prepares students to sit for state licensure and American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics board examinations.

Accreditation

The National Commission of Orthotic and Prosthetic Education has fully accredited the Prosthetics-Orthotics Residency Program.
