Cardiology Research
Research is the foundation upon which world-class medical education and patient care are built. In the Division of Cardiology, our leading-edge research into the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart disease has led to important discoveries and kept us at the forefront of medical progress.
Active Research Program
Cardiology maintains active research programs in both basic and clinical domains. The basic laboratories, comprising about 30,000 square feet of research and office space, are housed in the modern Simmons Biomedical Research Building on UT Southwestern Medical Center's North Campus.
Eleven laboratories are equipped to perform leading-edge investigation utilizing molecular and cellular approaches. The fundamental biology of the cardiac myocyte is an area of particular emphasis.
Highly Integrated
Basic research in the Division of Cardiology is highly integrated with a number of established research programs across campus. These include:
Advanced Imaging Research Center
Craig Malloy, M.D.
Biochemistry
Steve McKnight, Ph.D., Chair
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery
Michael Jessen, M.D., Chair
Cardiovascular Imaging
Ronald Peshock, M.D.
Molecular Biology
Eric Olson, Ph.D., Chair
Molecular Genetics
Joseph Goldstein, M.D. and Michael Brown, M.D.
Pharmacology
David Mangelsdorf, Ph.D., Chair
An especially close relationship exists between the Division of Cardiology and the Dallas Heart Study, which is a multiethnic population-based study of 6,101 adults from Dallas County that was designed by Drs. Ronald Victor and Helen Hobbs.
