Controlling Cholesterol
Today, millions of people take statins to help regulate their cholesterol and reduce the chance of a heart attack. That lifesaving medication was made possible by the pioneering work of UT Southwestern researchers Michael Brown, M.D., and Joseph Goldstein, M.D., who in 1985 shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor, which controls the level of cholesterol in the blood and cells.
