Dr. Chung Named Chief of Pediatric Surgery

 

Dai Chung, M.D., is the new executive vice chair of surgery, the chief of pediatric surgery, and senior vice president of surgical services at Children’s Health.

Dr. Kirkwood Named Chief of Vascular Surgery

 

Melissa Kirkwood, M.D., has been named chief of the division of vascular surgery, making her the first female division chief in the department.

Surgery Faculty Professional Development Program

 

This year, the Department of Surgery initiated a professional development training program for all surgery faculty. The program, led by professor and executive vice chair, Fiemu Nwariaku, M.D., includes leadership training, mentorship and coaching, and career planning

Dr. Joshua Gatson is Studying TBI

 

Assistant Professor Joshua Gatson, Ph.D., is analyzing fluid-based biomarkers like creatine kinase B (brain) in amateur and professional boxers in order to better identify traumatic brain injuries (TBI) immediately after they happen.

Obesity is a major health epidemic in the United States. As of 2017, the rate of both child and adult obesity hovered between 30 and 39 percent in Texas. Across the country, adult obesity topped 30 percent in 25 states. At UT Southwestern, patients have a number of multidisciplinary options to help them become healthier.

New Device Gives Hope to Patient

 

Four years ago, the FDA granted Carlos Timaran, M.D., permission to perform operations using an aortic arch aneurysm repair device. As of Friday, April 13, UT Southwestern Medical Center became the third facility in the nation to use the device and the first in the southwest.
