Chief Resident Graduation and Intern Onboarding: A Virtual Season

Virtual graduation
The residents, their friends, and families enjoyed a virtual celebration for the 2020 graduating resident class.

For UT Southwestern chief residents, 2020 has proved to be the year of virtual celebrations, and while they could have easily given in to the disappointment of not having an in-person graduation ceremony, the residents instead embraced the opportunity to make the night their own, complete with well wishes from faculty and peers as well as a few celebrity guests.

Heading up the graduation planning team this year were surgical residents Kristin Gee, M.D., and Joshua Weis, M.D. Together, the two gathered video messages from faculty and residents, as well as a special surprise — congratulatory videos featuring John C. McGinley and Robert Maschino, better known as Dr. Cox and the Todd (respectively) from the television show Scrubs.

Despite its virtual platform, the graduation ceremony retained the emotion of the usual in-person event, and the department celebrates this step in the careers of the 2020 chiefs.

Similar to the graduating class, the incoming resident class is experiencing virtual onboarding. Wherever possible, virtual learning has been incorporated into their training. For example, grand rounds and major lectures are done virtually, and Associate Program Director Deborah Farr, M.D., has mailed out suture packages to help the residents practice on their own. In the UT Southwestern Simulation Center, residents practice their technique while appropriately masked and spaced apart.
