Residency Program Launches Professional Development Series

 

This year marks the first of a new lecture series for the general surgery residency program. In response to the changing field of medical education, the Department of Surgery implemented a professional development lecture series designed to give residents the opportunity to expand their knowledge base beyond the technical skills needed to become a leader in the field of surgery.

Resident Jeopardy

 

The general surgery residents recently took the ABSITE (American Board of Surgery In-Training Exam), which is designed to assess their progress as residents. In preparation for the exam, residency Associate Program Director Deborah Farr, M.D., put the residents through rounds of “Jeopardy.”

A Story from the UT Southwestern Academic Global Surgery Fellowship

 

PGY 3 Freda Ready, M.D., shares a story about an experience she had with the academic global surgery fellowship. Dr. Ready gave a grand rounds presentation about her experiences in September of last year.

Student Research Project Highlight

 

At UT Southwestern, third-year medical students develop their research skills by devoting 12 weeks to a scholarly activity rotation. This rotation is a valuable part of the curriculum and helps students engage with faculty.

Surgery Resident Wellness Committee

Research resident Audra Clark is serious about burnout. In fact, Dr. Clark’s concern for the well-being of her fellow residents prompted her to form the General Surgery Resident Wellness Committee, a resident-run group that advocates for health initiatives that prevent burnout.
