Department to Host Surgical Society Chairs

 

The Department of Surgery will be hosting the Society of Surgical Chairs (SSC) Women’s Committee spring leadership meeting in April.

Research Under New Leadership

 

The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the consolidation of its research efforts. The program is under the direction of the vice chair of research for the department, Rolf Brekken, Ph.D. Dr. Brekken is assisted by the manager of basic science operations, Deborah Carlson, Ph.D., and the manager of clinical research, Nadia Nassaj, M.S.

Watson Award Keynote Speaker

 

December 6 marks the date of the 2018 Patricia and William L. Watson Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine presentation and lecture. This year’s guest speaker will be Dr. Julie Freischlag, CEO of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and Dean of the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

New Technology Has the Potential to Improve Organ Transportation

 

On Saturday, June 16, Dr. MacConmara and the transplant team successfully transplanted a donor liver into patient Gregory Nielsen using the OCS. Saturday’s success is another step in establishing a new standard of care in transplant surgery – one that will open up possible donor organs to recipients who were out of reach without the OCS.

Burn Trauma Division Gets a New Name

 

The division of burn, trauma and critical care has been changed to the division of general and acute care surgery. The division was officially renamed in September of 2017.

New Parkland Hospital

 

Parkland Hospital has gone through some dramatic changes over the past eight years. The new 2.8 million-square-foot campus broke ground in October of 2010, and was ready for occupation by August of 2015.

Announcing the winners of the 20th Annual Surgical Research Forum in which residents present their work to a panel of faculty judges.

Hudson Penn Award Recipient

 

The award is in its 40th year, and is given by the Department of Surgery to a senior medical student whose performance in surgery and attitude toward the care of surgical patients represents the highest standards of UT Southwestern Medical School. The prize, which was established in 1979, is named for the Lee Hudson and Robert Penn families.
