Walter P. Clements Jr. University Hospital Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit

The Neurosciences ICU at the Walter P. Clements Jr. University Hospital is a state-of-the-art 24-bed Unit that is equipped and designed to provide coordinated, comprehensive care while closely monitoring and treating patients with life-threatening neurological conditions. It is one of the largest of its kind in the region and is staffed continuously with a highly trained team of physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, dieticians, nurses, patient care technicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other ancillary staff. It is one of only four Neuro ICUs in the country to be recognized as a Gold Beacon of Excellence Unit by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

One of the distinguishing features is that every ICU room is equipped with continuous video-electroencephalographic (video-EEG) capability with 2000+ days of continuous EEG being performed annually. A CT scanner, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, and angiography suites are all located adjacent to the ICU. The neurosurgical operating rooms and the post-operative care units are also nearby.

Collaborations

We work closely with the Neurosurgery, Vascular Neurology, and Neurointerventional counterparts to provide collaborative care for our patients. We believe in a patient- and family-centered model of care, and patients and family members are encouraged to participate in our multidisciplinary rounds.
