Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) Interdisciplinary Program
Primary question: The primary question in managing a patient with suspected NPH is whether to insert a shunt.
Our team comprises of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, and physical therapists.
What we do
The program is structured to apply best practices by reducing unexplained variability and systematically collecting outcomes for continuous quality improvement and research, to inform the decision to place a shunt. Suspected NPH referrals are evaluated by neurology, neuropsychology, and neurosurgery in our interdisciplinary clinic. The team reviews 5 cases every other week to determine the next steps, including further testing (CSF removal with gait and cognitive assays, lumbar infusion test, CSF pressure monitoring, and MRI quantification) and form a consensus on shunt insertion. Our diagnostic algorithm and surgical/ nonsurgical management plan continuously evolve based on compiled outcome data.
