Science in 60+: Anchored in Hope

Amputee patients unable to use traditional prosthetics can achieve mobility with a procedure called osseointegration.

An innovative procedure known as osseointegration is giving amputee patients at UT Southwestern a new lease on life. Orthopedic surgeon Alexandra Callan, M.D., and plastic surgeon Jonathan Cheng, M.D., work together sculpting tissue and attaching the bone-anchored prosthesis. The implant allows for natural movement and control, offering newfound mobility to those unable to tolerate traditional prosthetics.
