Medical Mysteries: Dr. Reimold (Answer)
Transcript
- Welcome back to the case of the 51-year old man who presents with a cough for two months, as well as a very loud murmur. He was admitted to the hospital where blood work confirmed that he had heart failure. And additional blood work showed no evidence of infection. The diagnostic test that was performed was an echocardiogram and here we see his mitral valve is very abnormal and in fact, he had a prolapse or flare posterior leaflet. This is associated with mitral regurgitation or leakiness of the mitral valve. Because he had severe mitral regurgitation, he ultimately underwent mitral valve replacement to improve his symptoms and allowed him to return to his full-time activities. The care team at UT Southwestern was delighted that we were able to return him to his normal active lifestyle.
