UTSW leader wins prestigious 2025 NIRSA Honor Award

Suzette “Suzi” Smith has received the 2025 NIRSA Honor Award, the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s (NIRSA) highest honor that is presented annually to a leader in collegiate recreation. As Director of Student Life at the Bryan Williams, M.D. Student Center, Ms. Smith has inspired countless students during her 35 years of UT Southwestern service.
“I am completely overwhelmed to receive this award,” Ms. Smith said. “I feel fortunate for the support I receive from UT Southwestern that allows me to be active in the organization, build a strong foundation for networking, and enhance programs for students.”
Since its founding in 1950, NIRSA membership has grown to nearly 4,500 professionals, students, and associates, serving an estimated 10 million students annually across the U.S. and Canada. As college and university students develop into future leaders, NIRSA members support their learning and growth by fostering lifelong habits of well-being. Leadership, teamwork, dedication, and respect are among the many skills exercised through competition, fitness, and recreation.
After graduating with a degree in physical education from the University of North Texas, Ms. Smith accepted a graduate assistant position at Indiana University-Bloomington and subsequently earned a Master of Science in recreation administration. In 1989, she joined NIRSA as a professional member and was hired by UTSW the following year as Coordinator of Campus Activities. In 2001, oversight of the newly constructed Bryan Williams, M.D. Student Center – and its 43,000 square feet of space and more than 150 student staff employees – was added to her role when she became Center Director. In 2017, she took additional responsibilities over student special events and commencements for all UTSW schools and was promoted to Director of Student Life.
“Suzi has become a pillar of the UTSW campus, providing not only recreational services but fostering a culture of well-being and connection,” said Mike Chadee, Senior Manager of Campus Activities. “Her tireless efforts have made her a trusted leader and mentor, and her influence is felt by colleagues, students, and staff alike. Suzi’s ability to inspire and uplift those around her, while consistently championing the values of recreation and wellness, has made a lasting difference in so many lives.”
As a 40-year NIRSA member, Ms. Smith uses the skills she has learned to ensure emotional and physical fitness remain a priority in what for many may be a high-stress academic environment.
“Working with students is the best part of my job. I absolutely love the opportunities to watch students thrive at UTSW and into their professional careers,” she said.
Cameron Slocum, M.B.A., Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Academic Affairs and the Medical Group at UTSW, said he admires Ms. Smith’s steadfast support and contributions to NIRSA, leading programs and initiatives that have enriched the field of recreational sports and enhancing the experiences of students and professionals.
“Suzi’s involvement has included various leadership roles, including President, Vice President, and Past President of the NIRSA Foundation Board, and she has actively served on numerous committees and planning groups,” Mr. Slocum said. “Her long-standing dedication to NIRSA has not only helped shape the organization, but it also has provided invaluable resources and guidance to recreational sports professionals nationwide. She is truly deserving of this honor.”
