More than 80 UT Southwestern employees recently entered the On My Own Time art show, which is now in its 21st year. Click through the photos below to check out some of the artistic works as well as scenes from the award reception.

Entries ranged from a graffiti-style acrylic painting depicting the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic to serene color-photography nature scenes.
Dr. Talia Collier’s Mixed Media piece called Doha Tea Time earned first place in the Amateur Division. Her painting was inspired by her time in Doha, Qatar, working at a children’s hospital.
Courtney Borchert’s Mixed Media entry called Clarity Cake is intended to spark dialogue about the shifting health care landscape, particularly for women.
Austin Jacobs won first place in the Color Photography (Amateur Division) category for Quietest Place in the United States, a scene in the Hoh Rain Forest in Washington state’s Olympic National Park.
Thoa Bui received an honorable mention for her Color Photography (Amateur Division) entry, Mirror Image. She describes her photography style as naturality.
A mosaic-covered ceramic cat called “What’s New?” earned Dr. Angela Scheuerle an honorable mention in the Sculpture (Amateur Division) category.
In the Corporate Collaboration (Amateur Division) category, members of an art team show off their first place certificates for an entry called Blossoming With Individuality. Derek Loewe’s Digital Art (Professional Division) piece called Alzheimer’s – Slow Death received an honorable mention.
A whimsical crocheted dragon called Kaida earned Katie Head an honorable mention in the Textiles and Fiber Arts (Amateur Division) category.
Keri Cheek received honorable mention for her Black and White Photography (Amateur Division) entry, Devil’s Playground.
Dwayne Bio stands beside his winning digital artwork piece, Love is Free; Freedom is Not, based on a sketch of two young sisters in the West African country of Sierra Leone. Mr. Bio’s work also won the People’s Choice award and tied for Best in Show.
Ann Chisholm created her winning collage,  Redundant Ransom Note, as a commentary on society being held ransom by social media. The piece took first place in the Mixed Media (Professional Division) category and tied for overall Best in Show.
Colorful works of art in all shapes, sizes, and media graced the walls of the Faculty Club during the reception.
A Ceramics, Wood & Glass entry called The Variant (An Ode to Francisco De Goya) from Andrew Butynes was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and Goya’s “Dark Paintings.”
A digital art image called Milky Way behind Fishers Towers, Moab, UT, was submitted by Claus Roehrborn, M.D.
Colorful sculptures and jewelry creations were among the entries.

May Urquidi stands beside her self-portrait watercolor, The Moments and a Focus, which was inspired by the environments she is surrounded by each workday.
Karanjit Kooner stands beside his team’s entry, Before and After, Story of Texas Thistle (Cirsium texanum). The group’s photographic collage at top, which shows colorful purple thistles bloom and then wilt over time, won first place in the Corporate Collaboration (Amateur Division) category.
Kathryn Cavanaugh (left) and Brittney Hubbard were members of a team to produce Blossoming With Individuality, an artwork piece that received honorable mention in the Corporate Collaboration category.
Holly Crawford, Executive Vice President for Business Affairs, presents Dwayne Bio his award in the digital art category for Love is Free; Freedom is Not. Mr. Bio earned first place in the Amateur Division category, won the People's Choice award, and also tied for Best in Show.
UT Southwestern Art Curator Courtney Crothers presents awards and congratulates all employees who entered the On My Own Time art show.
