This Heart Month, we invited the UTSW community to walk to their favorite places on campus and snap a selfie.

You brought the selfies – and the heart – to this photo gallery. We will be notifying prize winners shortly.

Brooke Bumbard, Multidisciplinary Surgery Clinic: “My favorite spot on campus is the rooftop of the outpatient building parking garage. When I first started at UTSW, the roof parking had a stigma like you must’ve been late to get that parking, but I choose to park there for the amazing view and fresh air in the morning and evening back to my car. Nothing like a view from the top!”

Carol Law, Aston Pelvic Floor Clinic Physical Therapy: “This park is next to the Aston Building. During the temperate weather months, I enjoy a quick lunch in the park, relaxing while listening to and identifying birds and well as watching the antics of the squirrels. The branches of the magnolia and sumac trees in the corner reach as high the fifth floor. During the inclement weather days and dog days of summer, my coworkers and I have a great view from the ‘magnolia room’ window of the visiting wildlife. Most days I see a glimpse of the sunrise.”

Cherisse Logan, Logistics and Value Analysis: “I love this place because the people are easy to work with and we work as a team.”

Elizabeth Ellen Anderson, Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs: “My favorite place is where I can see almost all of the campus spread out. It reminds me of all the discovery, education, and healing that happens here each and every day, and that in some small way I am able to contribute to that.”

Guy Cramer, Neurosurgery: “My favorite spot is over by the wooded bird sanctuary, particularly the walking trail that weaves around it. It's a nice place to go on my lunch break for quiet time – whether it's getting my daily steps in, collecting my thoughts, or just to enjoying the natural scenery! During the course of my employment at UTSW I have lost over 100 pounds. I believe that walking on my breaks has played a major role in keeping it off.”

Kristen Wade, Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs: “My favorite spot on campus is near the sculpture by the Bass parking garage.”

Rachel Shearon, Multidisciplinary Surgery Center: “Our favorite place on campus? Right here at home with the family! These lovely ladies to my right have made it so easy to call UTSW my home! Glad that when I moved here to Texas, I was blessed enough to meet these two wonderful people. Proud to work with the best colorectal team!”

Sandra Jackson, Accounts Payable: “My favorite spot is our Relaxation Room here in the Bass building. I love, love, love having somewhere to go that’s peaceful and quiet where you can just let it all go for 30 minutes. I frequent this place during my lunch hour, and when I come back, I’m revived and ready to get through the rest of the day. Thank you to our Employee Assistance Program for coming up with this fantastic idea.”

Saron Seyoum, Multidisciplinary Surgery Clinic: “We all took a selfie together on our favorite spot at UTSW, which is the seventh floor of the Outpatient Building lobby. This spot is a must-see! Even if your doctor is late to see you, you do not mind because of the magnificent scenery of the sky, and the city landscape. It has a peaceful and comforting atmosphere. We love UTSW!”

Tammy Walton, Allergy, Immunology and Pulmonary Specialty Clinic: “Since working here at UTSW nearly 20 years, and being assigned to different locations, I must say how much I love my present place and the ability to gaze out my window on any given day, either smiling in amazement below at the newly developed serenity park, or out at the Dallas skylines and being amazed by the beauty of change across the campus.”

Tiwania Braziel, Guest and Patient Services: “I love the walk on the connector bridge; you have a good view and fresh air!”

Allyson Hart, Guest and Patient Services: “I love this place because of all the wonderful people I get to meet. Especially volunteers like FiFi!”

Ana Nyandiko, Clements University Hospital Oncology: “Our favorite place on campus is where Chelsea La Fond [RN, Oncology] is working. She always fills our day with joy and laughter.”

Anjanette Pitts, Otolaryngology: “I love the new West Campus Building 3. It’s so bright and clean here and there are so many windows. If you start to feel a little stressed, you can take a short walk away from your desk just to glance out the window into the garden below.”

Ashley Kane, Neurology, Moncrief Medical Center in Fort Worth: “I love the north view of downtown Fort Worth from our Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation reception area.”

Barbara Fliege, Dermatology: “My husband and I carpool, so I make the half-mile walk from North Campus to South Campus almost every day. I enjoy the fresh air and the view while enjoying a brisk walk.”

DeAnne Carmichael, Specialty Pharmacy: “This my favorite view on campus! The Specialty Pharmacy is why I am here at UT Southwestern. Every morning, when I walk up to open the doors, I feel excited about what new opportunities are ahead for the day, the week, the years! Always makes my heart happy!”

Edwin Montes, Planning and Construction: “My office looks toward the North Campus where the research happens; it is the home to Nobel Prize winners and their work. The campus is the structural personification of innovation and the first footsteps to the future. I see it every day because it is from my office, and it reminds me why I work here and why I love doing what I do.”

Jay Dwyer, Jennifer Gillespie, Radiation Oncology: “This is one of our team workrooms that reminds us to stay creative and enjoy collaborating with our co-workers. Kchuyler Myers, Heart and Lung Transplant: “I chose the time clock station for my favorite place. This is where the magic happens; I clock in to my UTSW life and clock out to Kchuyler's life. At work, I am a point of contact for patient care services, and at home I am a mother and spouse. I'm thankful to clock in and out every day, earning income to support my family.”

Marisa Naughton, Office for Technology Development: “Our office lobby is our favorite spot. Monica Haverkamp, Internal Medicine: “The C. Vincent Prothro Plaza on North Campus is a beautiful park-like setting and a great place for lunch!”

Lori Gwartney, Office for Technology Development: “My favorite place on campus is like a secret little hideaway outside and adjacent to McDermott Plaza at the basement level. Sitting next to the little koi pond amongst the birds and the breathtaking landscaping, I enjoy the serenity with a meditative breath of fresh air. A great place to start or end my workday with revitalizing/rejuvenating energy, and restful mindfulness.”

Natasha Baldia, Internal Medicine: “This lovely oasis sits between the Cary (F) and Jonsson (K) Buildings, right off of McDermott Plaza. When the weather is a bit warmer I like coming here to read, eat my lunch, or to just sit and enjoy being outside for a few minutes.”

Nelly Garduno, Physical Medicine, at the NG food court: “Witnessing the interplay of daylight during lunchtime is an undeniable gift.”

Taylor Walding, Willed Body Program: “This ‘long range selfie’ (using my smartphone’s camera timer) captures me in my quiet place I like to go some days before my afternoon/evening shift. It’s near the Memorial Gardens, bordering the southwest corner of Inwood at Harry Hines. Also, the birds’ nests bring me (and hopefully whoever sees this) calm and peace!”

Teran Jeffery, Sponsored Programs Administration: “My favorite spot is the pond between the Bass Center and the C. Kern Wildenthal Research Building (NL). My dog and I go on walks and play (chase the ducks) frequently near the pond.”

Toni Haste, Digital and Interactive: “My favorite place is in my cube, updating Center Times Plus, because I get to read about all of the amazing and inspiring things happening at UT Southwestern while I work.”

Vida Rhodes, Urology, Neurology, and Spine, Richardson: “This is the second floor of the Richardson location that has a nice sunny view and is a good place to do some laps! This month I celebrate five years cancer-free, thanks to UTSW!”

Carrie Pickert, Harold Been, and Anaid Vejar, Police Department: “This is our favorite place because of all of the great people we get to interact with, as well as the amazing and beautiful fountains outside and the modern and unique design of the hospital itself.”

Hector Yepiz, Coral Chacon, Chuck Sever, and Ricardo Rayas, Guest and Patient Services: “Our favorite place is the Chihuly sculpture in the first floor lobby of the Seay Biomedical Building. It is a work of art and the No. 1 landmark for patients and staff on the North Campus.”

Christine Duria, Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs: “My favorite spot on the campus of UTSW is the walkway right outside the Bass building in front of First Step Learning Centre. At the end of a long work day, taking that walk while holding my youngest daughter’s hand as she points to the airplanes above or the water fountain below – it’s all worthwhile to see her smile. She holds my heart. To have an onsite daycare on campus right next door also makes it convenient and gives peace of mind.”

Anakaren Zapata, Jordan Hutter, Robin Kidd-Jackson, David Tindall, Radiation Oncology: “Coworkers make all the difference!”

Demetria Wilson, Internal Medicine: “This is my ‘get away from the office for a few minutes’ place. It’s relaxing, I can take a walk here and I love the trees... and during the Christmas holidays, it is very beautiful!”

Denise Leeming, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation: “My favorite oasis is the koi pond on South Campus. It’s a quick retreat, just a short jaunt from Aston where I work. Whether the waterfall is flowing during the warm months or the pond is still during the cold months, it is always relaxing watching the fish swim. The small things that bring balance to a stressful schedule are what make life worth living, and I feel that balance here, which is why at least a few times a week I try to visit it and seize the day – or better yet, CARP diem!”

Helen Scott, Simmons Cancer Center Bone Marrow Transplant: “This is my favorite place to walk every day because it is so relaxing/calming.”

James Hammon, Aston Infusion Clinic: “I love this place because it is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It is also very quiet so I can grab 40 winks during lunch sometimes. I don’t have time to tell you where it is because I have to go back to work now.”

Jennifer Johnson, Internal Medicine: “I work in the NB building, and for a quick break away from my desk or even for lunch, I love to step out to the courtyard that the Simmons Cancer Center buildings surround. It’s peaceful and quiet and especially nice when the water feature is running during the warmer months. It’s a place I can go sit to clear my head, breathe a little fresh air, let the sun shine on my face and recharge at any time of the day!”

Jennifer Matthews, Multidisciplinary Surgery Clinic: “My favorite place is outside the Outpatient Building. There are park benches to eat lunch, relax, and take in some fresh air.”

Keysha Hale, Enrollment Services: “My favorite place is my desk here in The Office of Enrollment Services! I absolutely love, and find so much joy in taking care of all the past, present, and incoming students for the medical school. I love being able to help them when they’re in need, whether it’s transcripts, directions, or just conversation. They think I’m helping them, but truth is, they’re helping me to be a better person in many areas and I am truly grateful.”

Kristen Steinlage, Surgery: “I really enjoy all the art at CUH, but this one in the lobby of the third floor is my favorite!”

Melanie Holt and Lori Gwartney, Office for Technology Development: “Our office lobby at the BioCenter on the East Campus is my favorite place because I start my day walking into an environment of calming artwork and beautiful décor, and it starts my day off just right. We are fortunate enough to meet and greet faculty, entrepreneurs, clinicians and students here at OTD and be part of the new research and discoveries we protect at UT Southwestern.”

Melissa Jackson, Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center Clinical Research Office: “This is my favorite place because it is beautiful, quiet and peaceful. I love walking across the bridge and watching the water flow over the rocks as the ducks swim. This is also a great place to take scenic pictures and a walk. The benches and lampposts accentuate the beauty of the area.”

Rachael Lefevre, Department of Surgery: “Pond at south campus by E building. Nice lunch spot when the weather is good. Extra beautiful when the water lilies bloom!”

Rebekah Munoz, Float Pool: “My favorite spot is the lobby on the 12th floor of CUH. I love going there just before going home and seeing the sunrise! It's my most favorite moment and spot when I need a simple reminder that a new day is starting for my patients and me.”

Rocio Rangel, Cytogenetics: “About 2-3 times a week, I like to walk from the Bio Center building to the green area in North Campus, especially on days when I feel like I have been sitting for too long; it gives me time to clear my mind, while getting that rush of energy to continue with my work day!”

Stacie Skinner, Radiation Oncology: “I love this place on the 14th floor because it allows me to see the great City of Dallas, as well as most of the UTSW campus. I'm proud to be a member of the UTSW team. It makes me feel like I'm on top of the world!”

Susana Mendoza, University Police: “The Bass Tower Food Court is where I go during my lunch break and breaks because I love watching the little kids laugh, run and play to their hearts’ content. So joyful!”

Tanesha Hadley, Office for Technology Development: “My favorite spot is in my cube at the Bio Center in the Office for Technology Development, sipping on tea during my breaks in between work.”
