Celebration snapshots: 2022 Leaders in Clinical Excellence Awards

It was an afternoon of honors and an evening of celebration as the campus community gathered for the fifth annual Leaders in Clinical Excellence Awards ceremony, capped with a tree-lit reception outside on McDermott Plaza. Click through the photos below for a flavor of the event.

The awards table gleamed at the start of the 2022 Leaders in Clinical Excellence Awards.
Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, UT Southwestern President, leads off the fifth annual Leaders in Clinical Excellence Awards ceremony.
Dr. W. P. Andrew Lee, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean of UT Southwestern Medical School, and Dr. James “Brad” Cutrell after being presented with a Rising Star Award.
Dr. Cutrell thanked colleagues, family and the Infectious Diseases (ID) trainees he works with, saying “It’s truly every day that I get up and come to work, you’re the ones who inspire me to do better, because the future of ID is so bright.” He dedicated his award to his sons and wife.

Dr. Dultz thanks her husband and “three little munchkins” in the audience – Isabelle, Eliana, and Lexi – and closed with a quote from poet Mark Anthony: “And one day she discovered that she was fierce and strong and full of fire, and that not even she could hold herself back because her passion burned brighter than her fears.”

“To be a wonderful mentor and to be a functioning faculty member at an academic medical center in the modern era,” Dr. Gerber said, “everything you do is about teams.”
The 2022 Leaders in Clinical Excellence Awards features eight individual winners and two winning programs.
Dr. Lee honors Dr. Myra Wyckoff, a 2022 Mentoring Award recipient. In her acceptance remarks, she thanked the many people who have coached her throughout her career.

Dr. John Warner, Executive Vice President for Health System Affairs and Health System CEO, congratulates Dr. Erin Gordon, this year’s Patient and Family Recognition Award recipient.
Dr. Gordon thanks her colleagues, her family, and “each and every patient I have cared for throughout my career. The lessons learned far exceed my expectations.”

Dr. Yopp represented the Multidisciplinary Liver Tumor Program. In his remarks, he thanked his partner, Dr. Amit Singal, who was unable to attend the ceremony but was at home watching the livestream.
Several previous Leaders in Clinical Excellence Award recipients, including spouses Dr. Lina Chalak (2021 Mentoring Award) and Dr. Hicham Ibrahim (2019 Program Development Award).
Dr. Warner with Dr. Shivani Patel, who received a Program Development Award for the Obstetrics Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Program.
After receiving a boisterous ovation from her QAPI colleagues, Dr. Patel said the award “belongs to the greatest team that I have the greatest privilege of walking side by side with daily.”

In her remarks, Dr. Pearson said that “teaching learners and taking care of patients are the greatest service that any of us can provide.”

Dr. Gebreyohanns said that the goal for him and his colleagues “is to make wonderful, innovative medicine accessible to everyone, even 8,000 miles away.”

Dr. Podolsky presents Dr. Collins with the 2022 Patricia and William L. Watson Jr., M.D. Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine.
Upon winning the Watson Award, Dr. Collins thanked – among others – the members of his program.
“The physicians that I work with (are all) outstanding, truly wonderful physicians,” Dr. Collins said. “And all the other members of the program – nurses, pharmacists, APPs – I could just go on and on.”
Dr. Collins continued: “Everyone in their particular role, they are just truly outstanding and completely dedicated to the mission of the program, which is simply excellent and compassionate clinical care.”

After the ceremony, attendees were treated to a reception on McDermott Plaza.
