According to a National Sleep Foundation poll, nearly three-quarters of American adults experience a sleeping problem a few nights a week or more. Over one-third report getting less than seven hours of sleep each weeknight and being so tired during the day that daily activities are affected. Studies show that lack of sleep can lead to poor work performance, risk of injury, health problems and relationship difficulties.

Since 2001, UT Southwestern’s Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program has trained numerous sleep specialists who integrate several areas of medicine to diagnose and treat the 100 or so known sleep disorders.
Tools such as a polysomnogram (sleep study) and sleep diary are commonly prescribed as a first step toward understanding sleep patterns and preparing an individualized plan of care for each patient.
