The Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center has offered mental health services for adults since 1943. Our psychiatrists, psychologists and other clinicians provide comprehensive assessments and the latest treatments for mental illness. UT Southwestern mental health professionals provide services on an inpatient or outpatient basis.

UT Southwestern offers a full range of mental health services for adults, including:

  • Addiction and substance abuse;
  • Aerospace psychiatry;
  • Anxiety, phobias and panic disorders;
  • Bipolar disorder;
  • Depression;
  • Geriatric psychiatry;
  • Memory disorders and dementia;
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders;
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder;
  • Schizophrenia; and
  • Women’s mental health.

Outpatient services are offered for people who experience problems with work, relationships or who have symptoms such as depression or anxiety. Treatment is accomplished through medication, therapy (individual, group or family), psychoanalysis or marriage and family counseling.

The Family Studies Center (FSC) is a nonprofit counseling center. It provides affordable family/systems therapy on a sliding fee scale to individuals, couples and families living in the Dallas area. The center takes a family approach to therapy for:

  • Child and adolescent behavioral problems;
  • Marital problems, divorce and remarriage;
  • Step-parenting and multi-generational family issues;
  • Depression and anxiety;
  • Grief and loss;
  • Problems generated by substance abuse and violence in the home; and
  • Family stressors dealing with the ill and the elderly.

UT Southwestern researchers investigate diverse psychiatric conditions, including depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and addiction. The department is granted millions of dollars each year for studies in its state-of-the-art research facilities.
