The Neuro-oncology Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center is supported by the Annette G. Strauss Center for Neuro-oncology, and is conducted in collaboration with the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as with the departments of neurosurgery and radiation oncology. The Neuro-oncology Program is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors of the brain and spinal cord, as well as tumors and other cancer-related neurological disorders of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Meningiomas, glioblastomas, acoustic neuromas and astrocytomas are just some of the tumors we treat.

With our Neuro-oncology Program, UT Southwestern offers a comprehensive and integrated approach to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with neurological tumors, through state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, surgery, stereotactic and conventional radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. In addition, through UT Southwestern’s membership in the North American Brain Tumor Consortium sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, patients may participate in innovative clinical trials aimed at advancing our knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of neurological tumors.

UT Southwestern’s patient-centered team approach gives patients access to physicians and other health-care providers from the fields of neurology, neurological surgery, radiation oncology, neuro-oncology, neuropathology, neuro-radiology, rehabilitation medicine, neuro-psychiatry and social work. These physicians from the various treating services at UT Southwestern formally meet once a week to discuss each patient’s condition and to coordinate his or her care.

The Annette G. Strauss Center for Neuro-oncology is the cornerstone of UT Southwestern’s neuro-oncology research. Its focus is to improve treatments available for patients – both inpatients and outpatients – and conduct research of tumors of the central nervous system, including benign and malignant brain and spinal-cord tumors.

Cancer professionals on staff at the Annette G. Strauss Center work to improve treatments through innovative clinical trials. They focus on projects aimed at creating new treatments for childhood and adult brain malignancies, as well as at improving existing ones. Exciting discoveries from these clinical trials are routinely being translated into reality at the patient’s bedside.

The Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center holds a broad-based collection of cancer programs, each providing a wide range of patient care services.
