Primary Care

At UT Southwestern Medical Center, our primary care physicians and researchers strive to help our patients maintain optimal health and well-being throughout their lives. The physicians at UT Southwestern are dedicated to treating our patients with attentive and compassionate care in the following primary care services:

  • Family medicine: provides comprehensive care for the whole family, from newborns to seniors, including preventive care and disease maintenance;

  • General internal medicine: specializes in maintaining long-term adult wellness, including the prevention and treatment of common disorders like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, obesity and osteoporosis, and the coordination of care with other specialists;

  • Geriatrics: focuses on comprehensive health care for seniors;

  • Gynecology and obstetrics: provides comprehensive obstetrics and gynecology for women throughout all phases of their life, with a special focus on high-risk pregnancy, fertility, preventive care for peri-and post-menopausal women, urogynecology and gynecology oncology; and

  • Pediatrics: offers a vast array of specialized medical services for children.

UT Southwestern has pioneered many important advances in medicine and patient care, and our primary care physicians are widely regarded as among the best in the nation. A 2006 U.S. News and World Report survey of leading medical schools for primary care specialization ranked UT Southwestern 20th in the U.S. The survey took into consideration factors such as peer assessment for quality, faculty/student ratio and percentage of graduates entering the field of primary care.

UT Southwestern also has one of the largest academic physician practices in the nation and is a major referral center for patients with the most complex conditions. Our commitment to primary care is exemplified by the comprehensive specialties we offer.

Our physicians have the extensive knowledge and expertise that comes from evaluating and treating thousands of patients. On an annual basis, our clinicians provide care to patients during more than two million outpatient visits and 89,000 inpatient visits.
