Students:

Stipends

Division of Basic Science (DBS)

Prospective Ph.D.  students apply to the DBS rather than the individual graduate programs. All enrolled students receive a nationally competitive stipend currently set at $26,000 per year. Additional funds provided to the student cover the full cost of tuition, a comprehensive health insurance package and student service fees.

Stipend support during the first year of graduate school is provided by the DBS, rather than individual faculty mentors. This allows students to freely choose among the programs and participating faculty mentors. In subsequent years, students receive stipend support from research grants of their dissertation mentors, or from one of seven institutional NIH training grants associated with various areas of research training.

Division of Applied Science (DAS)

Biomedical Communications has a paid student assistantship available to a select group of students during the second year.

Biomedical Engineering offers limited financial research support, often in the form of a student research assistantship on either the UT Arlington or UT Southwestern campus.   top

Division of Clinical Science (DCS)

Clinical Psychology All Clinical Psychology students receive a nationally competitive stipend during Internship. Currently the amount is $14,472 for each of the two years of the 1/2 time internship that are normally completed during the 3rd and 4th years of the program. First and second year students may be eligible for competitive on-campus employment in research, clinical settings, or teaching assistantships as positions are available. The program will assist students in identifying these opportunities based on need and interest. Two competitive $1,000 scholarships may be offered (depending on availability of funds) in the areas of pediatrics and neuropsychology. Students employed on-campus or receiving the $1,000 scholarships are eligible for the in-state tuition rate. Incoming first year students with an interest in working with underserved children also have the opportunity to apply for the Cultural Diversity Fellowship at Children's Medical Center, which involves an individually developed clinical/research experience. The Carmen Miller Michael award is bestowed on an advanced student who shows outstanding leadership and academic skills in addition to dedication to the community.

Clinical Sciences offers a variety of training and educational programs. Stipend information for each specific degree is available on the Clinical Sciences website.

Radiological Sciences offers financial support in a competitive process in the form of graduate or research assistantships. This request must be submitted when applying for admission the Radiological Sciences program.

Rehabilitation Counseling Psychology does not provide financial support.

Training Grants

UT Southwestern has been awarded grants from the National Institutes of Health for research training of Division of Basic Science graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. These prestigious T32 Institutional Research Training Grants are among the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA).  A web page describing the UT Southwestern T32 grants is under construction. The graduate school encourages faculty to apply for training grants by providing data and other assistance.

Fellowships

Graduate Student fellowship opportunities are available from a variety of public and private sources. The graduate school continues to compile and provide access to a non-exhaustive list. For assistance in identifying and applying for appropriate fellowships, contact Dr. Stuart Ravnik. Additionally, GrantsNet is a comprehensive source for graduate and post-graduate funding, grant writing tips and tools, and advice for grant seekers; membership is free. top

Loans and Financial Aid

The Guide is written in as simple terms as possible, specifically for those unfamiliar with the complexities of student financial assistance. It's not intended to be the definitive debt management document or resource manual for every conceivable question on student loans. However, it provides a sound, comprehensive look at the basic information needed to effectively manage student loans. Additional sources of financial support for all graduate students are available from competitive awards through UT Southwestern as well as scholarships and loans from outside organizations. For assistance in identifying and applying for appropriate fellowships, contact Dr. Nancy Street

Postdoctoral Scholars

Postdoctoral Scholars are encouraged to investigate fellowships, grants and  funding search engine sites. For postdoctoral fellows transitioning to their first faculty position, or for junior faculty, grant opportunities can be found on the Transition Awards page. Information on career planning and various job boards are available on the Career Services Resources page.

Junior Faculty

Now in its eighth year, the Endowed Scholars Program in Biomedical Research provides in excess of $1,000,000 over 4 years to five, first-time, tenure-track assistant professors at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Funded by private endowment, the program has assured the successful launch of research careers for a cadre of 37 young and creative investigators.
