Six Pillars of our Residency Training

Our residency training program has a matrixed approach. In the vertical direction, we are firmly rooted in six pillars, which serve to structure, guide, and frame an intensive yet individualized experience. Running through all of this, interwoven in the horizontal direction, is our ethos to support our trainees - we recognize that you are more than your profession; our program directors prioritize not only your career but also your personal well-being, fostering a supportive and caring environment that values you as an individual. The six pillars are as follows:

  • arrow in the bullseye of a target Self Directed and Individualized

    Although we have a formal structure and framework to guide our residents through training, we recognize and respect that each person has her/his individual interests and career goals. This is not simply a cookie-cutter program. Our residents are encouraged to focus on areas of special interest and are given the latitude to explore, discover, and develop individual interests as they self-style their own experiences. Our program directors work closely with residents to guide them to an appropriate mentor, taking advantage of all the opportunities UT Southwestern and the surrounding region has to offer. Our R25 program affords a select cadre of research-driven residents the resources and robust framework to structure their experience around their research goals.

    Your training experience should be carefully planned and arranged rather than a happenstance experience. We invite you to curate your activities, working supportively with faculty mentors, advisors, and program directors. Flexibility begins as early as the intern year, and while there are ACGME guidelines to follow and top-down directives to honor, there is equal recognition of the vision, interests, and needs of trainees.

    The UT Southwestern neurology residency program is a hands-on experience. Our residents are participants, not witnesses who elsewhere might stand back and observe faculty taking care of patients. Residents who are engaged, conscientious, and passionate about neurology and patient advocacy thrive here. We firmly embrace the concept of “see one, do one, teach one.” You will leave this rigorous program knowing you are an excellent neurologist who can handle anything. R25 residents will find a rich research environment in which to explore, advance, and discover.

  • gauge Full-Spectrum Clinical Experience

    At UT Southwestern, we are not just a “one hospital training program” offering a unidimensional perspective. We provide direct clinical experience in three distinctly different settings:

    • William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (on the UT Southwestern campus)
    • Parkland Hospital (one of the busiest public hospitals in the U.S.)
    • VA North Texas Health System (the Dallas Veterans Affairs hospital)

    This trifecta provides expansive knowledge of the full spectrum of neurological disease, the resources afforded to broad patient populations, and a full range of inpatient and outpatient practice models.

    Residency programs at most institutions, including UT Southwestern, emphasize the inpatient training experience, but neurology is largely an outpatient specialty. Therefore, we expose our trainees to greater degrees of outpatient experience. We balance the wealth of inpatient opportunities with the numerous clinical subspecialty clinics we have to offer. Our diverse and accomplished faculty operates in many neurological subspecialties, allowing residents an opportunity to rotate in a variety of disciplines.

    The Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern is privileged to have the resources, facilities, and myriad of clinical experts to provide each of our patients the care every human being deserves.

    We are committed to good doctoring and sensitive, patient-centered care. In addition to covering a wide range of neurological topics, our didactic curriculum includes extensive core training in “the art of neurology” and a thoughtful approach to building human connections with our patients. These are the intangibles that are traditionally learned with experience over many years but are not explicitly taught. We make them the centerpiece of our dialogue with you. Who you are as a doctor is equally important as who you are as a neurologist.

Other Neurology Residency Programs

The combined Neuro-Psychiatry, Child Neurology, and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities programs are respectively housed within the Psychiatry and Pediatric departments. The combined Neuro-Psychiatry program is one of only four training programs in the nation. The Child Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities programs are based at Children's Health, adjacent to UT Southwestern.
